# 2 large onions
# 2-3 dry red chillis, de-seed
# 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
# 1 tablespoon split black urad dal (minappa pappu)

# 1/2 tablespoon tamarind extract
# 1/2 teaspoon jaggery (optional)
# 2 tablespoon oil
# 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
# few fresh curry leaves
# 1/2 teaspoon oil
How to prepare Ulli Pachadi:
This is a very easy recipe. Take some big onions and wash them thoroughly and chop them into pieces. Take a pan and add some oil to it and heat it. Add few cumin seeds and dried red chillies and mix and fry them for a few seconds. Take some urad dal and fry them till they are red in color. Now remove the mixture from pan and cool it. Now in the same pan add some oil and add these sliced onions and sauté them for a few minutes till they become transparent. Turn off the flame and cool it.
Take the urad dal and cumin seed mixture and grind them to make a coarse powder. Now take the sauted onion slices and add this to the dal mixture powder and add some salt and tamarind along with some jaggery and grind the whole to form a paste. You are looking for some consistent paste you can add some water. In a pan add some oil and fry some mustard seed with some curry leaves for seasoning and let them fry. Turn off the heat and once cooled add these to the pasted onions and you can serve with idly or dosa.
